New York – March 12 2012

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State, United States:
“Today we held an informal consultation of the Quartet. We remain committed to the overall objectives the Quartet outlined last September and we agreed to meet in April. We reiterated our support for Jordanian peacemaking efforts and our call to both parties to remain engaged and to refrain from provocative actions. I also, on behalf of the United States condemned in the strongest terms the rocket fire from Gaza into southern Israel, which continued over the weekend. We call on those responsible to take immediate action to end these attacks and we call on both sides to make very every effort to restore calm.”

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State, United States:
“The Palestinian people just like their Arab neighbours, Israelis and all people deserve dignity, liberty and the right to decide their own future. They deserve a viable, independent Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel. But we know from decades in the diplomatic trenches that the only way to get there is through a negotiated peace. A peace that cannot be dictated from outside by the United States, by the United Nations or anyone else and one we will continue to pursue through every productive avenue.”

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State, United States:
“Like many Americans, I was shocked and saddened by the killings of innocent Afghans villages this weekend. We send our condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and to the people of Afghanistan. This is not who we are and the United States is committed to seeing that those responsible are held accountable.”

New York – March 12 2012
The United Nations humanitarian chief said today that the government of Syria has said they need more time to consider the UN proposals for humanitarian access. “This is a minimal start, she said, “we need much, much more.”

Just back from her two-day visit to Syria, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos said “we need a robust and regular arrangement, which allows humanitarian organizations unhindered access – and time – to assess humanitarian needs.”

Amos said that she was “desperately worried” about what has happened to Syrians like those who live in Homs.

Valerie Amos, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Operations and Emergency Relief Coordinator, United Nations:
“My job is to try to find a solution and to do my best to get in, to get humanitarian assistance to the people who need it. I am desperately worried about what is happened to the people, for example, who used to live in Homs. We don’t know where they are, we don’t know what they need are, some of course will be sheltering with friends or with family, some may have crossed the border we don’t know. We need more transparency, more openness. We need to know what is happening to people.”

When asked if it was at all possible to end the humanitarian crisis in Syria, she said
it was “entirely possible” to get humanitarian assistance into the country now if the Syrian authorities agree to it. But what was not known was the scale of the humanitarian needs and how it might develop. “It is critical,” she said, “to have a better sense of what is going on.”

Last week Amos urged Syrian authorities to allow unrestricted access to humanitarian organizations to deliver aid to people affected by the ongoing violence, saying she was “horrified” by the destruction she had seen in some of the areas she visited during her two-day visit to the country.

United Nations – New York – March 01 2012 – Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General and newly-appointed Joint UN-Arab League Special Envoy on Syria during a bi-lateral meeting with Bashar Jaafari, Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the UN.

Kofi Annan said that in order to succeed it was extremely important that we all accept that there should be one process of mediation.

Kofi Annan, United Nations Arab League Joint Special Envoy for Syria:
“I think the message is clear, that the killing and the violence must stop. Humanitarian agencies must be given an access to do their work and it is regrettable that that doesn’t seem to be happening. That is not happening. They should also find a way of resolving, getting them together to dialogue. There is a need for dialogue between all actors in Syria and that is what we would want and try and push as soon as possible to get the dialogue going. I know there are people who have other ideas that dialogue may not be the way to go and one should use other means but I think for the sake of the people, for the sake of the Syrian people who are caught in the middle a peaceful solution through dialogue and a speedy one is the way to go.”

United Nations, February 03 2012

President Johnson Toribiong of Palau told journalists in New York today that actions by individual countries are not enough to “stem the rising tides or the flood of global emissions” and an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is an appropriate recourse.

Johnson Toribiong, President of Palau:
“The truth is that nothing we or other specific countries will do will stem the rising tides or the flood of global emissions. We need everyone to buy in or it won’t work. An ICJ advisory opinion will give us the guidance we need on what all states must do.”

The Pacific island nation of Palau announced plans in September to seek an advisory opinion from the Court on whether countries have a legal responsibility to ensure that any activities on their territory that emit greenhouse gases do not harm other states. Continue reading »

United Nations – February 02 2012

The head of the United Nations entity mandated to promote gender equality today said that her priority this year is to enhance the economic empowerment and political participation of women and called for the support of the international community, as well as concerted effort by the entire UN system to ensure success.

Michelle Bachelet, the Executive Director of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), told reporters during a news conference in New York to mark the agency’s first anniversary that it has “come a long way in a short period of time.”

Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director, UN Women:
“We have come a long way in a short period of time, and I am really proud of what we have accomplished until now. If I want to put it in a context, two major events dominated the global debate in 2011. The first was the democracy movement in the Arab states and also the continued financial and economic crises. Women have been involved in and affected by both, and UN Women rendered important support. ” Continue reading »

United Nations – New York – January 31 2012

The United States Secretary of State today urged the United Nations Security Council to back the Arab League’s demand that the Syrian Government “immediately stop all attacks against civilians and guarantee the freedom of peaceful demonstrations.”

While addressing the Council on the situation in Syria, and urging it to back the Arab League’s call for an inclusive Syrian-led political process, Hillary Rodham Clinton addressed the concern of some members that it may be headed toward a situation similar to Libya.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, United States Secretary of State:
“But at the end of the day every member of that Security Council has a choice to make. If you do not choose to try to stand on the side of the Syrian people, then you are standing on the side of the continuing killing and abuses that are carried out every single day.”

The UN has repeatedly urged the Syrian leadership to end the violence, with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urging President Bashar al-Assad to “stop killing his own people” and embark on a path to greater democracy that heeded the people’s call for representation and respect of human rights.
